Ruling party sympathizers interrupt a live broadcast

  • On October 7, 2023, a group of individuals allegedly believed to be sympathizers of the ruling National Patriotic Party (NPP) invaded the studios of the privately owned media house UTV in Accra and interrupted the live broadcast of the United Showbiz. The assailants threatened to attack the host of the program, journalist Gloria Akpene Nyarku-Acquah (commonly known as MzGee). Their main target was Kwame A Plus, a media and political activist and outspoken regular guest on the show, who had allegedly torn apart a letter from the NPP sent to the management of the radio station to reform the program on which he appeared. A Plus had allegedly shredded the letter in a live broadcast while commenting on it, which was not to the liking of the individuals who invaded the studio to deal with him. Later, the Ghana Police Service apprehended the seven individuals connected to the incident, arrested and charged them with conspiracy to commit a crime and rioting. The Court fined them 2400 GHS, the equivalent of 188 euros.
