IPI DOCUMENTARY FILM

“Defending the future of free media”

On May 3, World Press Freedom Day 2026, the International Press Institute is proud to debut our documentary film “Defending the Future of Free Media.”

Featuring voices and stories that span IPI’s global network, this film is an homage to the resilience of IPI’s members and partners at the forefront of defending press freedom around the world – from Ukraine, Turkey, the Philippines, Mexico, the United States, Gaza, and Hungary.

Since 1950, the IPI global network has been a crucial forum for journalists and editors to come together to safeguard press freedom and the journalism that sustains democracy. At a moment of seismic change in our world, we’re continuing that legacy, supporting news leaders grappling with disruption, working with our network in defence of journalists’ rights, and identifying ways to strengthen quality, public interest journalism.

“Amid a dark year for the free press and democracy around the world, independent journalism has proven its power to roll back the tide of authoritarianism. As events in Hungary have shown,  independent news and information are a powerful defense against autocracy – and a potent antidote to propaganda and disinformation.

Independent media are the critical infrastructure of free societies, shedding light on the truth and holding power to account. On World Press Freedom Day this year, we call on global leaders around the world to recognize this critical turning point and moment of opportunity to help us build an environment in which the free press can thrive.
