Bolivia’s interim President Jeanine Añez signed an emergency decree extending the county’s COVID-19 lockdown which also introduced criminal charges for those spreading misinformation or causing “uncertainty” to the population about public health. Those found guilty could face up to 10 years behind bars. Critics say the vaguely worded decree could make the work of journalists more difficult, lead to self-censorship in the media, and be open to abuse against vocal critics of the government.
