Abdirahman Mohamud Ali is the fifth Somali journalist to be killed within a week, reports say. His beheaded body was reportedly found in Mogadishu yesterday, but no one has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks. Ali, 26, reportedly worked for the news website cayaarahamaanta.com.
Ahmed Abdulahi Fanah, 32, of SAPA News Agency, was shot to death on Friday, Sep. 28, in Mogadishu, according to an early report from the National Union of Somali Journalists.
“We condemn the apparently targeted murders of Abdirahman Mohamud Ali and Ahmed Abdulahi Fanah,” said IPI Executive Director Alison Bethel McKenzie. “Fourteen journalists have been killed in Somalia this year – by far the highest number since IPI’s records began in 1997. The government, with the support of the international community, must do everything in its power to reverse this situation and bring justice to these journalists.”
On Thursday, Sept. 27, the Human Rights Council of the United Nations unanimously adopted a resolution on the safety of journalists. Among other things, the resolution “calls upon States to ensure accountability through the conduct of impartial, speedy and effective investigations into such acts falling within their jurisdiction, and to bring to justice those responsible, as well as to ensure that victims have access to appropriate remedies.”
It also urges States to “put in place voluntary protection programs for journalists, based on local needs and challenges, including protection measures taking into account individual circumstances of the persons at risk, as well as, where applicable, good practices from different countries.”
Somalia was one of the 67 countries that co-sponsored the resolution. “Somalia should take whatever steps are necessary to fulfil its obligations,” Bethel McKenzie said.
