Khaled al-Essa, Syria

Syrian journalist Khaled al-Essa died on June 25, 2016 from injuries sustained when a bomb detonated in his home in Aleppo on June 16. His colleague, Habi Abdullah, for whom Essa served as a cameraman, was also injured in the attack. Both Essa and Abdullah were taken to a hospital in Antakya, Turkey for treatment. Essa was awaiting transport for surgery in Germany to remove shrapnel from his head when he died. The pair reported on the Syrian civil war from Aleppo and Idlib. Days earlier, they had survived a bombing raid as they covered clashes between rebels and government troops.
