Juan Arjón López, Mexico

On August 16, 2022, freelance journalist Juan Arjón López was found dead in the border city of San Luis Río Colorado in the state of Sonora, northern Mexico. According to the state prosecutor’s office, the reporter appeared to have died from a violent blow to the head. His disappearance had been denounced on social media since August 9.

Arjón López was the founder of Facebook news page A Qué Le Temes, reporting on topics such as events, local politics, and the environment. His most recent articles had been published on August 2 and two of them consisted of short news about the arrest of robbery and theft suspects.

On August 17 the municipal authorities declared to the local media that a suspect had been arrested for his alleged participation in the kidnapping and murder of Arjón López. No further details were provided about the identity of the suspect or the motive for the killing.
