Pablo Isabel Hernández Rivera, Honduras

On January 9, 2022, journalist Pablo Isabel Hernández Rivera was fatally shot while walking to church in Tierra Colorada, Honduras. Hernández Rivera died immediately and his body was found by his relatives.

Hernández Rivera was director of community radio Tenán 94.1 F.M, “La voz indígena Lenca” and known in the community to be a critical voice for the area’s ongoing problems.

In the years leading up to his assassination, Hernández Rivera had received death threats. Radio Tenán had also been subjected to threats. The radio station is known for reporting critically of public authorities and has repeatedly reported on the corruption accusations toward mayor Efraín Guadalupe Muñoz. The radio station staff and offices have been sabotaged and robbed, and staff has been receiving threats, dating back to at least 2021.
