Gumaro Pérez Aguilando was killed in Ayucan, in the Mexican state of Veracruz, on Dec. 19, 2017 when an unidentified gunman entered the elementary school where he was attending his 6-year-old son’s Christmas festival and shot him dead. Pérez covered crime for several publications and founded the news site La Voz del Sur. He reportedly was a participant in a journalist protection mechanism, although government officials said he had not indicated that he had received any threats prior to the killing.
