Police arrest journalist, confiscate his passport and telephone

On September 20, 2023, police in Banjulinding, a town in western Gambia, arrested and detained journalist Bakary Mankajang following the arrest of a suspect in the killing of two police officers on September 12. He was charged with interfering with witnesses by conducting journalistic interviews over the killing. Mankajang was released three days later. However, his passport and telephone were confiscated, and he was requested to report twice a week to the police station.
