Vienna, 20 June, 2024 – The International Press Institute (IPI) announces that Frane Maroević has decided to step down as the organization’s executive director. This decision followed a constructive discussion with the new Executive Board about the future direction of the organization.
Mr. Maroević stated: “I want to express my deep gratitude to the Executive Board and wish them all the best in steering IPI into its 75th anniversary. I also want to thank the entire IPI team for their hard work and dedication – together, we have achieved remarkable milestones. I am particularly proud of our collective efforts to put the killings and threats against journalists in Gaza at the top of the agenda and to underscore the complex threats journalists face in many other parts of the world. The latest IPI World Congress in Sarajevo was the highlight of my time at IPI, as it provided an important platform to discuss solutions to key challenges facing media and journalism today and drive forward our shared mission.”
Márton Gergely, chair of the IPI Executive Board, added: “During Frane’s tenure, IPI has played a crucial role in protecting journalists and upholding the principles of free speech and democracy. His work and dedication have significantly strengthened our impact on press freedom, demonstrating our commitment to a free and independent press. He was responsible for increasing the annual turnover and modernizing our financial and administrative procedures, paving the way for the organization’s stability and future success. The two successful IPI World Congresses under his leadership were pivotal in uniting our global community to address critical issues in media and journalism.”
Mr. Maroević concluded: “I am confident that IPI will continue to thrive and advance press freedom and support journalists worldwide. I remain dedicated to the cause and will always cherish the relationships and accomplishments we have built together. I wish the IPI team continued success.”
The IPI Executive Board expresses its sincere appreciation to Mr. Maroević for his dedicated service and leadership, and wishes him all the best.
Separately, the Executive Board also announced that Scott Griffen, a ten-year veteran of the organization who has served as IPI’s deputy director for the past five years, will serve as IPI’s interim executive director as of this week.
