Peter Julius Moi, reporter at the New Nation weekly newspaper, was fatally shot in Juba after leaving work on Aug. 19, 2015. Colleagues said Moi’s money and telephone were not taken after the killing, indicating that robbery was not a motive. Moi’s death came just days after South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir commented that journalists working “against the country” would be targeted.
