Independent journalist Ignacio Miranda Muñoz, 46, was gunned down in a hotel in the municipality of Zapopan in the state of Jalisco on Dec. 27, 2016 while vacationing with his family. Miranda had reportedly left his room and was sitting in a plastic chair near the hotel shop when two men and women opened fire on him. Despite hotel security, the attackers were able to enter and flee without being detained. The motive for the crime remains unknown.
