Freelance video journalist Ali Nur Siad-Ahmed was killed on Oct. 14, 2017 in a massive truck bombing targeting one of Mogadishu’s busiest intersections. Over 300 people died and more than 400 were wounded. Other journalists reportedly wounded included Abdulkadir Mohamed Abdulle of Voice of America (VOA), Mohamed Omar Bakay of Goobjoog Radio and Abdullahi Osman of Mandeeq Radio, as well as freelance journalists Abdiqani Ali Adan and Ahmed Abdi Hadi. According to the National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ), the journalists killed and wounded were “on duty to gather news” at the time of the blast. Somalia’s government attributed the bombing to the Islamic extremist group al-Shabab, but the group did not immediately comment to confirm or deny responsibility.
