IPI’s North American Committee has joined with the Haiti News Project, an effort to help Haitian journalists recover from the devastating 12 January earthquake on that island nation, as part of its commitment to promoting press freedom and journalism best practices throughout the Americas. The IPI North American Committee has made a donation to the project, which, supported by news organizations and individuals from all over the world, will provide tents and equipment for Haitian journalists. It will also offer a training program focusing on financial reporting and, eventually, an investigative reporting project in Haiti. IPI North American Committee Chair Patricia Smith encouraged other North American journalists to get involved in helping their colleagues in Haiti and said of the Haiti News Project, “It certainly is an important endeavor, and we are happy we can help.” If you would like to join us and our colleagues in our efforts to make sure that Haitian citizens have access to vital news and information, contact Haiti News Project coordinator Joe Oglesby. For information on, or to join, the IPI North American Committee, contact Patricia Smith.
