Award-winning radio journalist Yusuf Ahmed Abukar was killed when a bomb planted under the front seat of his car exploded on his way to work in the early morning of June 21, 2014. Abukar worked for Mustaqbal radio station in Mogadishu and Radio Ergo in Nairobi, Kenya and was well known for his work about Islamist military group al-Shabab and his criticisms of the Somali government. No group had taken responsibility for the attack as of June 27, 2014, but police said the bomb was remotely detonated. Abukar won the U.N.-sponsored Somali Media Awards in 2013.
