Shantanu Bhowmick, a reporter for TV news broadcaster Dinraat (Day and Night), was attacked and killed on Sept. 20, 2017 while reporting on a road blockade by a political party representing indigenous tribal people in the remote northeastern state of Tripura. Bhowmick was reportedly dragged off while trying to record images on his mobile phone when the blockade devolved into conflict between members of the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) and its rival, Gana Mukti Parishad, the tribal wing of the Communist Party of India, which holds power in the state. Bhowmick was found later with multiple wounds from a sharp object and died before he could be taken to a hospital. Police initially arrested two members of the IPFT in connection with the killing.
