Luis Alfredo de Leon Miranda, who worked for Radio Coaltepec, was found dead on February 1, 2018, in a cane plantation in Santo Domingue Suchitepéquez, southwest of the capital of Guatemala. The bodies of de Leon and another journalist were found with their hands and feet tied, and with bullet wounds to the head. According to the public prosecutor, they were also strangled. De Leon was reportedly helping a friend to cover a local carnival. Suchitepéquez is a drug trafficking hotspot, with high violence rates.
