Leodoro Diaz, 60, a columnist for local tabloid Sapol and a correspondent for the daily broadsheet Manila Bulletin and the Manila-based tabloid Balita, was shot multiple times by two gunmen on Aug. 7, 2017 while riding a motorcycle in the town of President Quirino, Sultan Kudarat province, Mindanao. His killers fled on another motorcycle. Diaz died on the spot. His son and another relative who were riding with him were reportedly not harmed. Diaz, who was also a volunteer reporter for the Radio Mindanao Network, covered stories on corruption, illegal gambling and drugs. On the day of his death, he reportedly told colleagues at dxMY Radio that he would be filing a report on illegal drug activities in Sultan Kudarat. Police said they believed his killing was work-related.
