Overview:
The International Press Institute (IPI) is seeking a dedicated and experienced individual to lead our program aimed at promoting access to information and press freedom in Türkiye. The successful candidate will oversee the program’s activities, ensuring effective, timely, and high-quality delivery aligned with the program’s objectives and work plan.

The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in freedom of information (FOI), understanding the critical role it plays in democratic societies. This position requires a strategic approach to advocacy and the ability to develop and implement initiatives that empower citizens to access information and promote transparency in governance.

This position is expected to be based at IPI’s office in Vienna. (Other locations, including Türkiye, may be discussed on a case-by-case basis.)

Key Responsibilities:

Program Oversight:

  • Oversee IPI’s ongoing program to support press freedom and access to information in Türkiye.
  • Supervise, implement, and ensure the quality and timely execution of all program activities, working to maximize visibility and impact.
  • Collaborate with local stakeholders—such as journalists and civil society organizations— to develop training and resources that promote FOI practices, ensuring that these efforts lead to tangible improvements in access to information for the public.

Program Management:

  • Manage and maintain the program work plan in accordance with the program budget.
  • Ensure correct and efficient management and expenditure of program resources and funding.

Team Leadership:

  • Manage and support other team members working on the IPI Türkiye program, ensuring effective use of time and resources.

Coordination and Collaboration:

  • Coordinate with IPI members in Türkiye, including the IPI Türkiye National Committee, to facilitate successful program implementation and support the committee’s strategy to expand its influence among journalists.
  • Collaborate with relevant IPI team members in Vienna and elsewhere to achieve program objectives.
  • Ensure timely and effective communication among all team members involved in program implementation.

Reporting and Representation:

  • Provide necessary information for donor funding reports, working closely with project management staff to ensure accurate and timely financial and narrative reports.
  • Represent IPI at international events, on panels, and in media interviews regarding issues related to FOI and media freedom in Türkiye.

Additional Support:

  • Support or carry out additional tasks as assigned by IPI’s management as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in program management, preferably in press freedom, human rights, or access to information.
  • Experience working with Turkish media, civil society organizations, or journalists.
  • Strong knowledge of press freedom and access to information issues in Türkiye.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, with experience in advocacy.
  • Ability to work independently while coordinating with a global team.
  • Fluency in English and Turkish is required.
  • Willingness to travel and represent IPI at national and international events.

Location

The preferred location for this position is Vienna, Austria, which is regularly ranked as the most liveable city in the world. Other arrangements may be discussed on a case-by-case basis. All nationalities are eligible to apply. A successful candidate who is not a citizen of the European Union/European Economic Area will be eligible for a work permit in Austria.

All IPI team members are accorded 25 holidays per year, in addition to public holidays.
