The International Press Institute (IPI) will host an event on Sept. 13 in London to showcase and discuss the winning projects of the IPI News Innovation Contest, in the context of media innovation sustainability, in partnership with The Guardian newspaper and Journalism.co.uk (which runs the news:rewired conference), and with the support of Google Inc.

Mark Little, chief executive of Storyful, will be a key speaker. The event, which is being held at The Guardian, will include a Google+ Hangout on Air to allow News Innovation Contest winners who cannot make it to the event in person to participate and to allow the public to view the conversation.

IPI Executive Director Alison Bethel McKenzie said: “We are delighted to be holding this event in partnership with The Guardian and Journalism.co.uk. We believe it’s going to be a vibrant, innovation-focused media gathering with an exciting exchange of ideas.”

The London event accompanies the creation of the IPI News Innovation Platform (IPI-NIP), a follow-up to the successful Google-funded IPI News Innovation Contest in which nearly $2.7 million in grants was given to media-related projects throughout Africa, Europe and the Middle East.

With all grant funds disbursed among 17 winners, and final reports flowing in, the IPI-NIP will shift the innovation focus to ‘sustainability’.

IPI-NIP will promote online dialogue, networking and new ideas around the topic of digital media innovation and sustainability. Central to this dynamic will be the experiences of our News Innovation Contest winners as they embrace the next stage of their projects. But everyone involved in the evolving digital media mash up will be invited to a conversation on innovative concepts, financing and sustainability taking place on the IPI-NIP website, and on Facebook and Twitter.
