Tips for turning investigative reporting into character-driven visual stories with sound.

How to craft a podcast series that captivates audiences as they are watching a movie full of twists and turns? George Lavender, the Head of Creative Production, Limited Series at Wondery, will share his experience in tailoring narrative for creative audio formats. Join us for “Movies without Picture,” to hear from the Emmy award-winning journalist on how to turn investigative reporting into character-driven visual stories with sound.

Meet the speakers

George Lavender, Head of Creative Production, Limited Series at Wondery

George Lavender is an Emmy award-winning journalist and the Head of Creative Production, Limited Series at Wondery. At Wondery he has executive produced more than two dozen #1 shows including Dr Death, The Shrink Next Door, WeCrashed and Harsh Reality. Before joining Wondery he reported for NPR, Marketplace and 99 Percent Invisible among others and taught at USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. He was named one of the Hollywood Reporter’s “35 Rising Executives Under 35.” He has taught storytelling workshops around the world including for Sundance Collab and the International Documentary Association.

 

Facilitator and host: Gülsin Harman, IPI Turkey, Journalist

Gülsin Harman is an Istanbul-based journalist who frequently contributes to the New York Times and BBC Monitoring. After the Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University in 2020, she received a grant from the European Journalism Center to develop a newsletter. She was selected to join the Product Immersion Program at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism and invited to the News Product Alliance Product Expansion Program.

As a researcher, she looked into the online harassment of journalists in Turkey for the International Press Institute in 2016. The detailed investigation resulted in a public database and case profiles featured in a report published by the Institute for the Future. In 2020, Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society (BKC) at Harvard University selected her to be a participant in the Assembly Fellowship program which brings members of the cohort of technologists and public policy leads to develop interventions in the areas of disinformation.

This series of master classes is open to all media professionals in Turkey, including journalists, editors, media managers, business and product managers, community managers, as well as freelance reporters and journalism students.

This is also a chance to network, exchange ideas, tips, and best practices – to share what’s worked for you and learn from others.
