Journalists in Africa play a vital role in enabling access to information and facilitating transparency and accountability. Yet they continue to face serious risks while doing their work, including physical violence, arrest, imprisonment, surveillance, and online threats and harassment. The level of accountability for these attacks remains low.
In the first nine months of 2023, IPI documented 500 cases of press freedom threats and violations in Africa. States are the leading actors behind these attacks. This period also saw the killings of journalists in Cameroon, Nigeria, Lesotho and Sudan among other countries. To date, the perpetrators are yet to be held accountable.
November 2 marks International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists. IPI is bringing together journalists, civil society leaders, and legal experts to explore ways to address the issue of impunity in Africa, including through existing national, regional, and international frameworks for the protection of press freedom.
