Tarun Kumar Acharya, India

Unidentified assailants killed Tarun Kumar Acharya on May 28, 2014 at an isolated location at Khallikote in Ganjam district, Odisha province, as he was on his way home from work. Acharya, who was a reporter for local Oriya-language private news station Kanak TV and local newspaper Sambad, was found with stab injuries to his chest and his throat slit. Police arrested the owner of a cashew plant who they said hired contract killers to murder Acharya after the journalist reported on inhumane conditions for children working at the plant. As of Oct. 8, 2014, police had arrested the plant owner, Shyam Sundar Prusty, and three other suspects, but were still searching for others who might be involved.
