Marcos Hernández Bautista, Mexico – Targeted Due to Work

On January 21, 2016, Marcos Hernández Bautista, a reporter for the daily Noticias, Voz e Imagen de Oaxaca, was shot in the head when getting into his car outside a bar in San Andrés Huaxpaltepec, in the state of Oaxaca. On March 3, 2017, a regional court in Puerto Escondido convicted Santiago Martínez, a former police commander of the Santiago de Jamiltepec municipal police, of homicide and sentenced him to 30 years in prison. The motive for the murder remains unclear, but the journalist had received threats due to his reporting prior to his death.
