Russian occupying forces forced their way into the apartment of local media expert Yury Antoschchuk, stealing several pieces of video equipment. Antoschchuk was able to capture the moment of the break in on a video camera installed by the front entrance of his apartment. Prior to the incident, the journalist had managed to flee Kherson and escape to Ukrainian government-controlled territory and was not present during the incident. The journalist gave an account of the threats that members of the press face in Kherson, saying that they are often targeted by Russian security forces alongside other public officials and former members of the Ukrainian armed forces. As a result, Antoschchuk claimed that most journalists had fled the city to Ukrainian-controlled territory due to fears of repression. Antoschchuk is the head of the regional chartible NGO “Unification,” which, among other activities, promotes independent hyperlocal media organizations and other press freedom projects.
