On 14 March 2024, Russia banned entry to 277 U.S. citizens for alleged “Russophobic” activity, according to a press release by Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and reporting by Russian independent media. The list of banned U.S. citizens included three media workers: legal journalist Benjamin Wittes, New York Times contributor Robert Worth, as well as Voice of America’s National Security Correspondent Jeff Seldin. Russia’s MFA accused all 277 U.S. nationals of “being directly involved in anti-Russian actions”, as well as of being “involved in the development, implementation and justification of the Russophobic course of the current U.S. administration”. Wittes, Worth and Seldin were not known to have publicly commented on this decision. It was not clear what publications by the three journalists motivated the Russian MFA’s decision.
