On 12 July 2023, Russia’s internet censor and watchdog Roskomnadzor sent a request to a court in Moscow, demanding to fine journalist Yevgeniya Albats for not labelling her publications as authored by a “foreign agent”, a status she was handed in June 2022. Roskomnadzor did not specify the publications it was proposing to fine Albats for. If found guilty, the journalist faces a penalty of up to 50 thousand rubles.

Albats, the editor-in-chief of Russian independent online media outlet The New Times, announced in September that she had left Russia, months after being designated a “foreign agent” and after being fined 70 000 rubles for allegedly publishing “fake news” on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which according to Russian legislation is any news on military operations in Ukraine not confirmed by the Russian government.

UPDATE: On 5 February 2024, a court in Moscow fined Albats 40 thousand rubles on charges of not fulfilling the legal obligations of a “foreign agent”.
