On April 11, the military authorities in Mali banned all political party-related activities. This move was seen as despotic and authoritarian in a regime led by the military, which came to power through a coup and failed to organize elections as the two-year transitional period expired in March. Following this development,  the media regulatory body then ordered all media not to cover or report on political parties’ activities. The political parties and the media umbrella organization, Maison de la Presse, rejected the authorities’ move and have called on media and journalists to continue reporting on all political parties’ activities in line with press freedom and the public’s right to information.
