On January 31, journalist Nicholas Adiumi Kayembe of Maendeleo radio and television based in Gety, a town 60 km from Bunia, the capital of Ituri province in northeast DRC, was arrested and detained for three days before being released on February 3 after paying a fine equivalent 19 euros. According to the DRC press defense organization OLPA, the journalist was arrested on the order of Fidel Bangajuma, the new traditional chief of the Walendu Bindi chiefdom. Kayembe was accused of defamation based on an interview granted to Olivier Peke Kaliali, the honorary customary chief of Walendu Bindi, and aired on the media channels. The interview in question allegedly challenged the legitimacy of Fidel Bangajuma.
