Novaya Gazeta, one of Russia’s leading independent media outlets, announced on its website that it would suspend work because of another warning it received from Russian media regulator Rozkomnadzor. The warning said Novaya Gazeta had mentioned a co-called “foreign agent” in its reporting without stating in the article that it was a “foreign agent.” The regulator did not specify which article it meant. The announcement stated that Novaya Gazeta planned to suspend all publication on its website, social media networks and the print newspaper until Russia’s so-called “special military operation” in Ukraine was over. Media reported that the censorship warning by Rozkomnadzor appeared to be an act of retaliation for the newspaper’s decision to report on the war and the participation of its Nobel Peace Prize winning editor-in-chief, Dmitry Muratov, in an interview with the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The group interview with Zelenskyy by Russian journalists was quickly banned by Roskomnadzor. The warning came one day after the interview. Novaya Gazeta received its first warning over its coverage of the war in Ukraine on March 22. In response to the warning and a new law on “fake” news, it initially decided to remove war related material from its website. This decision meant all publication was suspended, silencing one of the country’s most important independent publications.
