On March 9, 2024, the Mauritanian media regulator, the Mauritanian High Authority of Press and Audiovisual (HAPA), suspended two local news websites, Anbaa Info and Taqadoum, for 60 days for “undermining Algeria”.  The suspension followed publications of the two online media outlets about the death of a Mauritanian presidential guard in a traffic accident in Algeria. Reports indicate that Anbaa criticized Algeria for not expressing condolences after the incident, while Taqadoum published a story alleging that the Mauritanian president complained about frequent phone calls from his Algerian counterpart.
