On 31 May 2022, two foreign journalists and their Ukrainian fixer came under fire near Severodonetsk, in Ukraine’s Luhansk region, injuring the fixer and slightly wounding one of the journalists.

According to fixer Mykola Pastukh, Khon Chun Kaoru, Alex Chan Yuk (Hong Kong-British and British citizens respectively) and him were planning to travel to Severodonetsk for reporting work and attempted to find out whether it was safe to do so at the time. A group of soldiers approached their car to advise them against it. Just as the group turned back to leave, a landing from mortar fire occurred seven to eight meters from where they were, said Pastukh. The Ukrainian fixer received a “complex shatter wound” on his right hand and was taken to Lviv for an operation. Alex Chan Yuk received a concussion, while Khon Chun Kaoru was left unharmed.
