On 18 April 2023, Russian journalist and documentary film maker Ayuna Shagdurova was briefly detained in the city of Zakamensk, in Russia’s Eastern Buryatiya region. According to Sibir.Realii, the regional edition for Siberia of RFE/RL, a U.S. Congress-financed media corporation, police interrogated her following a denouncement made by a local resident, who claimed Shagdurova should be fined for “discrediting” the Russian army. It was not clear for what statements or publications the journalist had been accused, and police did not issue a fining document for “discreditation” following her interrogation. Shagdurova was able to return home later on the same day, wrote independent media outlet Doxa.
