Journalist Anna Sliva detained while covering anti-mobilization protest

On 31 March 2024, police detained journalist Anna Sliva as she reported from a picket in Moscow by women opposing mobilization of men for the war in Ukraine. Sliva’s arrest was initially reported on by independent outlet SotaVision, for whom Sliva was reporting.

According to the outlet, police asked Sliva to “come speak with them“at a police station, claiming that they were not detaining her. Police also confiscated Sliva’s press card and her editorial assignment document (Russian law requires journalists to hold both documents while on reporting duty).

The journalist was released within a few hours, SotaVision later reported. While at the police station, Sliva was handed a document indicating that police would check whether she had violated Russian legislation on public protests.

Anna Sliva is known to have reported on anti-mobilization protests in Moscow in the past. She was most recently detained on February 24 under similar circumstances.
