On February 17, the governor of Cabo Delgado province, Valige Tauabo, verbally attacked journalists for their critical coverage of the conflict in the region. Local media rights watchdog MISA Mozambique reported that Tauabo, speaking after the launch of the “Sport for Peace” project in Pemba, threatened journalists and alleged that they were colluding with terrorists. He further criticized independent media over their coverage which he claimed favored terrorist values over those of the local population and the Defense and Security Forces.
