On 21 February 2023, unknown culprits published a fake article imitating a publication by the Kyiv-based online media RBC Ukraine. The article in question heavily criticized the Commander in Chief of the Ukrainian army, Valery Zaluzhniy. Written mostly in Ukrainian, but switching to Russian in its last paragraph, the text listed a number of non-verified allegations against Zaluzhniy, mainly related to alleged incompetency and corruption. Both RBC Ukraine and its journalist Dmytro Braslvskiy, listed as the article’s author on the fake RBC page, denied having published the text. The media outlet also filed a complaint with police for illegal copy of its website. Commenting on the case for IMI, a Kyiv-based media rights defense group, Braslavskiy said that this was not the first time such an incident took place, without, however, adding details on previous cases. In this case, the fake article was published under the domain name rbk.media, while the actual domain name of RBC Ukraine is rbc.ua. Braslavskiy also accused “Russian propagandists (and maybe even [Wagner leader] Prigozhin’s [troll] factory” of being behind the fake publication. It was, however, not possible to independently verify these claims.
