On 29 December 2022, a court in Rostov-on-Don sentenced citizen journalist and Crimean Tatar activist Ernes Ametov to 11 years in prison. Ametov was accused of belonging to Hizb-ut-Tahrir, an Islamist organization which is listed as “terrorist” in Russia, but which functions freely in Ukraine and in most countries in Europe. The office of the special representative of the president of Ukraine to Crimea condemned the decision of the Russian court.
