On 23 September 2022, a court in Moscow placed SOTAVision journalist Artyom Kriger under eight days of administrative arrest after he reported from a protest against mobilization in Moscow. He was considered by police to have participated in an unauthorized demonstration, despite being present at the event as a journalist.

At least 24 journalists were detained in September during protests across Russia, at which demonstators opposed the recent mobilization order aiming to conscript male citizens into the Russian army in Ukraine.
