On January 19, Sekou Jamal Pendessa, journalist and secretary general of the Union of the Press Professionals of Guinea (SPPG), was arrested and detained. After three days of detention, he was presented before a court in Conakry, and charged with “unlawful participation in public demonstration and attempt to public order”. Pendessa’s arrest and charges were related to his press advocacy activities and his leadership in the defense of press freedom in Guinea, where the military-led regime has been trying to silence critical media and suppress the public’s right to access to information and freedom of expression both offline and online.
