Rajdev Ranjan, chief of daily national Hindustan’s bureau in Siwan, in the state of Bihar, was shot and killed on May 13, 2016. Ranjan, 46, had reportedly received threats from individuals connected to local strongman Mohammed Shahabuddin ahead of his death. Police in June 2016 detained Laddan Mian and charged him in connection with the murder. Mian, an associate of Shahabuddin, hired a 22-year-old hitman to kill Ranjan, police say. Ranjan’s family accuses Shahabuddin of masterminding the attack, but as of early September 2016 authorities said they still could not definitively link him to the crime.
