Photojournalists Rizal “Jack” Syahputra and Thomas Milala were killed by pyroclastic clouds during an eruption of Mt. Sinabung, a volcano located in Karo District, North Sumatra, on Feb. 1, 2014. The two were reportedly in the area filming a documentary and taking photographs to benefit refugees displaced by volcanic activity. Syahputra was the deputy chief editor of zonasumut.com, based in Medan, North Sumatra. Following their deaths, the local College of Communication – Development (STIK-P), which both Syaputra and Milala had attended, held an exhibit of their videos and photographs to raise funds for the refugees they had sought to help, which reportedly raised approximately €1,300.
