Italian photojournalist Andrea Rocchelli was killed in Sloviansk in eastern Ukraine along with Andrei Mironov, his Russian interpreter and fixer, on May 24, 2014 when they were hit by mortar fire. French photojournalist William Roguelon was wounded in the attack. The three were covering clashes between government forces and pro-Russian separatists in the area and were travelling by car when they came under gun- and mortar fire. Reports indicated that Rocchelli and Mironov were killed by shrapnel when they attempted to take cover in a nearby ditch after abandoning the vehicle. Officials in Kiev and pro-Russian separatists each accused the other side of having launched the fatal mortar fire. Agence France-Presse reported that Rocchelli, 30, was the founder of the Cesura photo agency and a contributor to leading media organisations including U.S. magazine Newsweek and the French daily Le Monde. Mironov, 60, was a well-known human rights activist who spent time in prison in Russia in the former Soviet Union.
