Unknown assailants shot dead Lawrence Okojie, a reporter with the Nigerian Television Authority, on the evening of July 8, 2017 in Benin, the capital of Edo state, as he travelled home from work. In August 2017, local authorities attributed the murder to “cultists” who were fighting in the area, saying that Okojie was killed when he stumbled upon them. Authorities said they had apprehended the murderer, but they failed to name the suspect and the local chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists continued to call for the arrest of Okojie’s killers.
