The body of photographer Edgar Daniel Esqueda Castro was found on Oct. 6, 2017 in the northern Mexican state of San Luis Potosi, one day after men dressed as police officers burst into his home while he was sleeping and abducted him at gunpoint. Esqueda was found dumped in an open area near an airport and local media reported that he had been tied up and tortured, but prosecutors denied that any of their agents were involved in the abduction. Esqueda, a freelancer, covered crime and social issues, contributing to local news sites Metropoli San Luis and Vox Populi. He had previously reported receiving threats from police, according to the federal government’s protection office for journalists.
