Karun Misra, a bureau chief for local Hindi daily Jan Sandesh Times was shot to death in Uttar Pradesh’s Sultanpur district on Feb. 13, 2016 when three men on motorcycles approached his vehicle as he was travelling home and opened fire. Misra was taken to a hospital, where he died. Police arrested five people in connection with the killing on Feb. 18, 2016 and said they recovered the murder weapon and cash during the arrest. Those arrested included local businessman Rahul Singh, who reportedly ran an illegal soil mining business that had been affected by Misra’s reporting, and Ajay Singh, who was alleged to have fired the fatal shots. Two other gunmen were also apprehended days later.
