Slovak investigative journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancée were found murdered at home in the town of Vel’ká Mača, near the Slovak capital Bratislava on February 25, 2018. Kuciak had been shot in his chest, whilst his fiancée was shot in the head. The police said in early statements that they believed the murder was connected to Kuciak’s work. Kuciak was known for his stories on tax fraud and suspicious real estate businesses for the news site Aktuality.sk. He was reportedly investigating Italian mafia dealings in Slovakia in the time of his murder.
