Pedro Tamayo Rosas, editor of La Voz de Tierra Blanca and a freelance correspondent for the regional newspaper El Piñero de la Cuenca and news website Al Calor Político, was shot by unknown assailants in front of his wife outside their house in Tierra Blanca in Veracruz state on July 20, 2016. At the time, Tamayo was part of a state-sponsored protection program for journalists, having received prior threats. According to police reports, Tamayo was shot multiple times by two men who pulled up to his residence in a black vehicle. He died on his way to a hospital. The motive for the shooting remains unclear.
