Journalist Nikolay Andruschenko, an investigative correspondent for weekly newspaper Novy Petersburg, died in a St. Petersburg hospital on April 19, 2017. Andruschenko had reported having suffered a severe beating on March 9, 2017 by two individuals who demanded documents and materials from an ongoing investigation into alleged abuse of power by police officers. He suffered a second assault days later, which left him in a coma from which he never awoke. His wife reportedly indicated that nothing was taken in the second assault. The motive for the crime was not immediately known.
