Ahmad Ibrahim, who heads the investigative unit of the Doha, Qatar-based Al Jazeera network, will take part in an IPI World Congress 2012 panel session titled, “Going Beyond Borders: Covering Breaking News in Your Own Backyard and Making Sure Your Story Gets Out to the Rest of the World,” on Tuesday, June 26.
Launched in June 2010, Al Jazeera’s investigative unit is “dedicated to breaking significant hidden stories from around the world for output across all the Network’s channels, languages and platforms”. The unit produces its own investigations, but also commissions stories of varying lengths from external sources.
Ibrahim, a British citizen of Syrian origin, also runs Al Jazeera Arabic’s Syria desk, and is responsible for the channel’s coverage of the Syrian revolution and its network of citizen journalists inside Syria.
In addition to the panel session, Ibrahim will take part as one of the trainers in the stand-alone one-day workshop on covering corruption, which is being organised in cooperation with the U.S.-based Investigative News Network (INN), and will be held on the eve of the IPI World Congress.
Ibrahim joined Al Jazeera in 2002. Prior to his current position, he worked as senior producer at Al Jazeera English, where he was responsible for producing numerous films and investigative documentaries, including the award-winning documentary, “Prisoner 345”.

Challenges, Concerns, Opportunities
Themed “Media in a Challenging World: A 360 Degree Perspective,” the 2012 IPI World Congress, to be held in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago from 23-26 June, 2012, will examine the many challenges, concerns and opportunities currently facing the media around the world.
In addition to a compelling programme, the Congress will feature the one-day workshop for reporters covering corruption, led by award-winning investigative journalists Brant Houston and David Kaplan, and a special awards evening honouring IPI’s 2012 Free Media Pioneer and 63rd World Press Freedom Hero.
Some 300-350 leading journalists and their guests from around the world are expected to take part in the three-day congress, the first of its kind in the Caribbean.
