The International Press Institute (IPI) Nepal National Committee today condemned the alleged attack against a journalist by a police official at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, Nepal on Sunday, Aug. 26.
According to the information available to IPI, Nepal Police Head Constable Basanta Bahadur Karki allegedly manhandled cameraperson Sachin Pariyar, who had come to the airport to cover the Nepal Cricket Team’s return from Australia after their participation in a U-19 cricket match.
Police also reportedly used indecent words against Karki.
The IPI Nepal National Committee condemned the incident. IPI Nepal Vice-Chairperson Taranath Dahal said. “It is shameful that the official who is assigned by the State to safeguard press freedom was involved in manhandling journalist.”
IPI members in Nepal also urged the Home Ministry to investigate the incident and take action against the person responsible for the attack.
